About this video

Zack Parker, VP of Engineering at CodePath, on the mission behind the work: reprogramming higher education to build the most diverse generation of software engineers, and using AI to make one-to-one support possible at scale.

Transcript

Hi. I’m Zack Parker, and I’m VP of Engineering with CodePath.org. CodePath is on a mission to reprogram higher education and create the most diverse generation of software engineers, CTOs, and founders.

Today, it is extremely hard to scale high-quality education. But with AI, we believe it is possible to give every student a 1:1 teacher-to-student experience. As a tech-centric nonprofit, we are investing in product and systems engineering to help us scale from 10,000 students to 100,000 students served each year.

Nationally. My team of software engineers and I are implementing CodePath’s AI strategy to provide personalized learning for every student. We want every student to have the individualized support they need to persist in computer science and land the most competitive, high-paying technical roles.

To measure our success, we are taking an outcomes-based approach. For our MVP, we’ll conduct A/B testing, looking at students who have the assistive AI turned on and those who have it turned off, and comparing their course retention and completion rates. Here are two examples of what personalized learning with AI looks like.

Adiah is juggling university classes, a part-time job, and a CodePath course. It’s been a hectic week, and she hasn’t logged on to CodePath for days. When she logs in, our GenAI tool provides a summary of what she should focus on today.

This helps Adiah pick up where she left off, making the best use of her energy and learning time. In a previous lesson, Calvin struggled with the concept of proxy servers. For this week’s lab, he needs to set up a proxy server, so our AI tool suggests learning materials, like a concept summary and video.

Calvin gets the help he needs to understand the concept better, allowing him to move forward and complete the lesson confidently. Thank you for your consideration. We’re excited to share more.
