Hi everybody Welcome to EF 2024 we are so excited to have you all joining us today would love for you to drop in the chat say hi share where you’re calling in from today is really an opportunity just to preview the platform get in it with one of our great Partners at Microsoft they will be sharing information about their upcoming opportunities to join their team this is a great chance to get some of your recruiting Focus questions answered from Microsoft and so without further Ado I am going to bring up Chi our speaker from Microsoft she is a great partner of code paath been with us a long time a wealth of knowledge and so we’re really excited to have her speak to you all today so Chi I’m gonna you know hand off the controls to you and welcome amazing thank you so much Geneva I appreciate it and hey everybody as Geneva gave a lovely introduction I am Chi and I work at Microsoft as you can see on my shirt as well so my full name is Chach chonu but you can call me Chi pronouns are she her and I’m an early in profession recruiter here at Microsoft and for those who may not be able to see me I have brown skin I’ve just got my nails done and I’m wearing glasses and a Microsoft t-shirt so I’m super excited excited to be here with you a little bit about myself because I’m going to be basically talking at you for the next little while I want to make sure you know who you’re here who you’re hearing from I graduated from the University of Washington if there’s any other fellow dogs go dogs back in 2018 so that was six years ago and I’ve been in recruiting ever since my personal mission is to make everyone’s lives better with every interaction so I’m hoping that I can do that for you all today and outside of work some fun things you can find me at a bar or restaurant I live in New York so love trying out new places going to Core Power Yoga classes on a run you can also find me a lot of the times on my couch with just TV or my Kindle or Tik Tok I also love to travel so you can always catch me on a flight as well but yeah that’s a little bit about me and I’m excited to share a little bit more about Microsoft so today it’s my pleasure to tell you all about what working Microsoft is like so Microsoft in 30 minutes essentially you’ll hear the why we exist how we work and what you can do here at Microsoft but first I did think it would be really fun if we could warm up with a little trivia quiz so let’s see how much you know about the world of Microsoft already you very well might know some of these things but some things also might be new to you so I’m excited to see what you all know and the way that we’re going to do Trivia today is we’re just going to utilize the chat which I see a lot of you are already doing so whenever you have an answer to the trivia question that will be presented on screen and I’ll read it out loud you can just put your answer in the chat and we’ll see what all of you know so first question Microsoft was founded in which city Albuquerque Seattle San Francisco or New York I see a lot of Seattle in there yep that’s my hometown we love it okay you all might be kind of surprised by this answer it was actually a Albuquerque so yeah in New Mexico Microsoft was founded in 1975 so we will be celebrating our 50y year anniversary next year but you all are correct our headquarters is in Seattle or just east of Seattle in Redmond Washington so it’s a trick question next question what is the world’s top selling video game is it a Grand Theft Auto 5 b Minecraft C Tetris or D Halo 5 Guardians Minecraft GTA 5 lots of Minecraft I wonder if anyone here plays Minecraft I don’t play any of these games but I’m sure some of you do and a lot of you were correct it is B Minecraft it’s sold an astonishing 300 million units since it was launched in 2011 and Minecraft was developed by Mojang I think I’m saying that correctly and Microsoft and aside from being a really fun game from what I’ve heard one of the special things about it is that it can help introduce people to coding fundamentals in a very like simple and accessible way so Minecraft hour of code is one way that we’re teaching 21st century skills and luners have participated in over 96 million hour of code sessions since 2015 so I think that’s really cool next question in 2023 so last year how many authentication attacks were blocked by Microsoft is it a 230 million B 730 million C 23 billion or D 230 billion I’m seeing some 23 billion that seems to be the consensus maybe 230 billion we’re all over the board here now I love it great guesses the answer is incredibly D 230 billion authentication attacks were blocked by Microsoft last year so cyber security as we I’m sure all know is a real and growing threat and we estimate that actually about a 25% of all cyber security jobs are going to be unfilled by 2025 fun fact all right next question what was the first Microsoft application was it Excel PowerPoint word or Outlook word excel lots of word in here we have Outlook awesome a lot of you got that right it is Excel another fun fact it Excel actually first launched not on the PC but on Mac in 1985 and then it came to PC in 1987 and it was originally called multiplan which I didn’t even know that but today Microsoft Office has about 50% of the office productivity software market share more than 1.2 billion people worldwide and if you didn’t weren’t aware we are using PowerPoint right now okay this one’s a fun question about the big trend of the moment which is AI when was the term artificial intelligence first used a 1978 B 1955 C 2002 or D 2022 1955 1978 we’ve got some 1955’s in there nice the answer is 1955 the same year that Bill Gates was actually born fun fact and it first appeared in a proposal for its study by academics at Dartmouth Harvard IBM and Bell Telephone Labs related to the last question what is the projected annual growth rate of AI adoption a 22% B 27% C 37% or D 77% a lot of D’s 77 the answer is actually C 37% nice so to put that into context from 2013 to 20122 Facebook had an annual growth rate of 10.9% which is still incredible but 37% compared to that is is amazing all right this one might be fun for anyone who’s interested in sustainability how much more energy efficient can data center can a data center be versus a traditional on-site service So 20% 40% 60% or 80% I love how all across the board these answers are yes and I see some people do know the answer it is D 80% and that’s because the centralization of infrastructure reduces the amount you need in total so I don’t know a ton about this but data centers are actually a key component of global sustainability efforts and the efficiency could be higher which we all recognize and in one study by an independent sustainability consultant Microsoft cloud data centers were found to be 2 2% and 93% more energy efficient than traditional Enterprise data centers which were between 72 and 98% more carbon efficient all right I think this is our last question including Satia Nadella how many people have served as CEO of Microsoft is it two three four or six lots of threes some twos in there and I see some people are even guessing who the CEOs were amazing you are all right it is B which is three so including SAA Bill Gates was first and then in 2000 Steve bomber did take over so I know someone put that in the chat and and SAA assumed the role in 2014 so 10 years ago and yeah it’s it’s very cool to see kind of how the TRU has gone with all of our CEOs and speaking of Bill Gates Can anyone name who these two gentlemen are and if you can’t see the photo it is a black and white photo of Two Gentlemen sitting next to each other smiling surrounded by a whiteboard and they both have glasses on Bill Gates and Paul nice yes so the gentleman on the left is Paul Allen and on the right is Bill Gates and back in 1975 in Albuquerque New Mexico they did team up and they saw the PC Revolution coming and had a really crazy idea which was to put a PC on every desk and in every home and that idea turned into the company Microsoft that I’m so proud to be employed by and you know what fueled the company back then is the same as it is today which is a passion for Learning and a passion for innovating and you know I wouldn’t be here with you all today if it weren’t for these two folks and like I said we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary next year so it is pretty amazing to see all that’s been accomplished in those 49 almost 50 years and a lot of things have changed in the world since 1975 when I know many of us were not even born but you know since Microsoft’s basically start up days they a lot has happened and you know Bill and Paul’s goal to put a PC on every desk and in every home has largely been achieved today there’s over a billion PCS that are now being used in homes and businesses worldwide and that Albuquerque startup is now one of the best known organizations in the world and that mission to you know put a computer on every desk in every home that mission itself has innovated over these years and you might now start hearing a new mission of putting co-pilot in every pocket but what fueled the company back then and that startup back then is the same and we’ve grown as a company into continue to really create things that help people get things done and you can see that growth here on the screen with some of these stats you know we’re a company of over 221,000 people operating around the world in hundreds of countries over one billion people on the planet use our product such as Windows Xbox edge browser which I’m currently using now so yeah Microsoft has has come along with and I do have a fun video to show you but it might be a little bit quiet so I encourage you to turn your volume up just for the video and I will do the same so hopefully it’s loud enough how do we Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more it starts with one from one employee to a team collaborating with another team from one partner to their customers to their customer customers your passion your Ingenuity your hard work supporting inclusive opportunity protecting fundamental rights committing to a sustainable future earning trust for our societ our economy our world that’s the impact that’s the impact that’s the impact each of us can have that’s our Collective opportunity empowering 8 billion people we’re entering a new era of AI where we will be able to build as fast as our imagination our creativity will have no constraints and we can focus on the big picture together we can ensure these benefits reach every country every industry and every individual when we EMP power every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more so hopefully you were able to hear that and if not I did drop the link to the YouTube video I hope that’s the right link so you should be able to watch it afterwards but as you could see in that video we are here to empower every individual and every organization on the planet to achieve more because what we do matter matters what you do matters and your impact matters and overseeing that very large Mission and ensuring our impact does matter is our senior leadership team as you can see on the screen there it’s it’s a very deep bench and there’s broad expertise from different fields we have alumni from places like Oracle Netflix McVie 3M AMX Etc and Brad actually Brad Smith who is in the bottom left corner of the slide he was the first person in his Law Firm to insist on a PC at his desk as a prerequisite for joining back in 1986 so he was one of us before he was one of us and running the show like I mentioned earlier is the gentem on the top left saan Adella he actually joined Microsoft in 1992 and then became CEO in 2014 so who knows if you join Microsoft today who knows where you’ll be in a c in a couple decades and he was succeeding Steve bomber like I mentioned and under his leadership he’s really been responsible for two major Transformations at Microsoft first was our pivot towards cloud and AI where we’re now leaders in the space and then second was our cultural transformation efforts to be a learning organization driven by something called a growth mindset and if there’s one idea that you remember about the working culture at Microsoft it you should make it this which is growth mindset growth mindset informs and guides all else it’s the realization that everyone can grow and everyone can develop and that you know potential is not predetermined and it’s something that you should nurture so with the growth mindset everyone can adapt to change you can learn from errors you can try something new and eventually succeed you won’t succeed every time but in the long run you know that’s what counts so if you join Microsoft you will see that your continued growth and your your learning is like the overriding prerequisite for all else to succeed growth mindset without a doubt is the best way for us to achieve our mission and realize our full potential so I’m really thankful for Satia for taking over and kind of changing our cultural mindset to really be focused on growth mindset and I won’t harp on it too much but I just wanted to reiterate you know it’s growth mindset is motivated by effort it’s it means you are taking risks you are taking a cognitive approach to errors you’re learning from your past mistakes and analyzing them to maybe improve in the future it’s being open being a very open-minded person and being open to diverse perspectives and new ideas and it’s also competing against yourself it’s you know self- betterment you know the success of others it’s not diminish your own so we’re we work here as a team and we collaborate but yeah so I just wanted to share that because that’s the biggest thing I think I take away from working at Microsoft and I did have another video on the next slide but I’m going to go ahead and skip it but you can find it on our YouTube channel if you want to explore more videos about working at Microsoft and then I just wanted to also note like because growth mindset is a part of our entire culture it’s not as simple as just saying have a growth mindset everyone and everyone just flicks a switch you know effort and energy are finite and if all your energy is being used up throughout the day it’s not realistic to expect growth so we have to create the right conditions to support everyone having a growth mindset so we do offer a lot of tools here at Microsoft and resources to help you work in the best way for you so you can feel your best you can continue learning have the time in your day and the energy in your day to actually want to continue learning and feel that sense of communic and belonging and that way we will all have more energy to think freely and clearly and imaginatively so it’s all about the possibilities and taking on challenges and seeing problems more as opportunities and we also try and cater to the needs of our people another really huge aspect of Microsoft culture is customer Obsession so from a growth mindset to bringing that approach to the needs of our customers One customer at a time and so if you ever interview at Microsoft and you want to showcase that you have alignment with our culture this is something that you definitely want to highlight is customer Obsession we should learn everything that we can about our customers needs and challenges and use that empathy and that insight to create Innovative and practical solutions for them and that will then Empower them to achieve more and how do we do this we by we measure our success by our customers successes and our customers can be anyone they can be our candidates they can be our actual customers they they’re anyone and we measure success not by our own internal processes but we use datadriven approaches to create products and services and experience that our customers want and need and we also rely on customer feedback early and often so we take in feedback and we actually listen to it and we evalue it so a few examples of us being customer obsessed who likes to use the Blurred background feature on video calls I don’t know if anyone uses those regularly I’m not using one right now but I I sometimes do on my teams meetings and so that actual that feature was actually developed by one of our software Engineers who was who has been deaf since birth and she was struggling to lip read and the backgrounds were often distracting so she did something about it and our unique perspective comes becomes something that the world now loves for the additional privacy that it offers another example which is AI super exciting the Microsoft Quantum team has literally decimated research times in one example they were able to identify half a million possible materials for battery development research which is something that would have taken years now which was done in weeks another example is Project silica this was replacing Legacy tape storage for cloud infrastructure with quartz glass in a proof of concept that they successfully stored of the 1979 Richard Donner Superman movie and a piece of glass which which was the size of a drink coaster and lastly the ad adaptive Xbox control contrer which is probably one of our well-known examples this is a fully customizable Xbox controller that enables people with specific Mobility needs sural policy for example to play games again and this product which is available to buy now if you wanted to to buy it came directly from a hackathon in 2015 and it’s a great example of how one person’s inspiration led to a partnership which then resulted in a collaboration that took a concept from an idea to a reality and another thing that’s huge about Microsoft culture is one Microsoft so I know we’re all our own individual selves and we’re all encouraged to bring our authentic selves to work but we play close attention to the needs of the individual as a key to success but we also enable that success to flourish and that is teamwork and unity and a shared sense of purpose and so we always try and harness all of our perspectives as individuals together and that’s kind of like a Launchpad for our creativity and that creativity leads to amazing new products like I mentioned before and that teamwork is also what scales individual effort and ambition into something that empowers the world I personally think of myself who has always like enjoyed individualized work but I feel like now being at Microsoft I’ve learned that if you want to go fast you can go alone but if you want to go far you should go together and it’s one of those slogans many might approach it with skepticism but it’s a deceptively simple and Powerful strategy introduced by Steve bomber in 2013 a rallying cry for a shared Vision with shared goals working towards shared success so what does working as one Microsoft really even mean it means being Nimble we’re balancing customer and business needs really quickly we’re also being communicative we’re ensuring that information exchanges Drive action and we’re being very clear with our communication being collaborative effective of coordination or effective coordination and expertise and being really decisive so being empowering everyone to make decisions quickly and also being motivated at Microsoft you’re really in the privileged position I think of being able to positively impact billions of people and and that should really inspire you and that inspires me on the daily another really key aspect to our culture is diverse and inclusive and when we say one Microsoft it is one team but it’s a team that thrives and it even depends on diversity on being a place for everybody so empowering the world starts with representing the world and we don’t just value differences we seek them out and we strive to learn from all of our biases that we all know that we have or even we don’t know that we have but we learn from that and we learn how to change our behavior and that is that growth mindset at work again and we don’t just try to on the piece of inclusive we don’t just try to include everyone we actually seek to harness the breath and the depth that make at our Collective Strength so you know unique perspectives lived experience is working alongside all people that are maybe different than us and learning from each other that’s what makes better Solutions and it makes each other better for everybody and I know I mentioned sustainability so I wanted to kind of touch on how Microsoft helps build a responsible future and when I say for everyone I really do mean for everyone and that’s what Microsoft means we if we’re not thinking holistically and globally then our mission to empower everyone is like flawed from the jump so we take our commitment to building a responsible future very seriously and creating technology in a way which is sustainable inclusive and safe and and accessible by Design so how can we expand opportunity how can we earn trust how can we protect fundamental rights and how can we advance sustainability these questions are what guide all of our decision- making and inform the way that we design and develop products it also shapes our processes and our policies we are a public company and the way that we help our customers Thrive and build Partnerships and so on so whatever it is that you end up doing at Microsoft if you do join these questions will help us align our actions with our mission so I encourage you to think about these questions when if you were to by chance interview with Microsoft and think about these things you’re interviewers would love to hear that and yeah those are some of the goals that we we strive to achieve or the questions that we strive to achieve with everything we do so a couple of our goals specifically in those categories for number one expanding opportunity is equipping more people with in demand skills so we are trying to provide more tools and resources where they can make the most impact we have trained 8.5 million people with in demand skills and have spent $3.8 billion in discounted tech for nonprofits and have made private data available to Society for earning trust we also are working on developing technology responsibly and respecting privacy and advancing cyber security like I mentioned that is a real threat to all so we’ve for example participated in responsible AI practices 3.2 million monthly active users of a privacy dashboard and 230 billion attacks like we mentioned in our trivia have been blocked in protecting fundamental rights our goal is to really expand accessibility and connectivity and Empower all communities all over the world and ensure that business practices are responsible and so for example we’ve provided high-speed internet for 63 million more people an additional $500 million is has been spent on black and african-american-owned businesses and we’ve protected journalism rights and content Provence technology and lastly advancing sustainability it’s you know really the defining issue of Our Generation which is eliminating eliminating carbon and waste and replenishing more water and preserving more land than what we use and working with sourcing Partners throughout the supply chain all right so I know I’ve talked at you about the why behind Microsoft and our whole history and why we exist which is really to empower every individual and every organization on the planet to achieve more and we’ve looked at how that culture and those commitments are really enablers of achieving that mission growth mindset customer Obsession one Microsoft diverse and inclusive we’re committed to creating not just business value but also social value value and positive impact in the world so the last thing I want to share with you and which is probably most important to you is what you can do with us at Microsoft and your possible roles and opportunities for joining so you kind of have two broad choices I mean I know Microsoft is huge and there’s many different things that you could do but you can kind of think of it in two broad choices before you get into those specifics which are based on basically two broad business areas into to which we’re organized so you can work in engineering or business essentially and what path is right for you comes down to your skills your background your experience your interests and so on and I know many of you are likely interested in our engineering roles so these are just a few examples as I mentioned there’s tons of roles here at Microsoft and you can check out our career site for any of those but some of our most popular engineering or technical roles are product manager technical program manager software engineer Hardware engineer and customer facing technologist and this is kind of just another view of how you how some of our roles are break broken out so as you can see there’s there’s many different places you could be majority of our hiring is is software engineering which is in that top category but then we also hire for Hardware engineering so let’s say you’re an electrical engineer or computer engineering major that might be something you’re more interested in we also have customer facing technology and data science roles and if you are interested in the business side of things which is where I find myself in Human Resources we also have some roles in marketing in HR like I mentioned Finance business programs and operations an MBA and Technical sales roles and this is just another look at that organized but because many of you are probably interested in software engineering I did want to kind of chat a little bit about the role and what it means to be a software engineer at Microsoft and as a software engineer you are you know the creative force behind most some of the most trusted and widely used software programs and applications that are used in the world so depending on what team you’re on you could be working on Excel which is the first application at Microsoft or you could be working on teams and be improving the Blurred background feature so there’s many other things that you could or products or services that you could work on at Microsoft as a software engineer you could also be working on those products as a product manager or technical program manager too but I think the biggest things for how to succeed in a sui role would be collaboration like I mentioned we work as one Microsoft so being very collaborative and knowing that if you go together you can go far also knowing how to design and develop and test the next generation of Technology Solutions and create software that empowers Millions so you’ll you’ll definitely be motivated in your role knowing that your products and services are empowering Millions so it depends on you know what team you’re on but for the most part as software engineer you’ll contribute to design ideas you will work with technical program managers and product managers for user needs and product requirements you’ll learn code base you’ll design code and test and you’ll communicate and fix and monitor issues as they come so I think I’ve mentioned this before but there’s a couple of bullet points here on what it takes to be a good software engineer here so deep knowledge of algorithms data structures system architecture potentially if you you know are that advanced in your degree or your career a strong customer focus very results oriented and data driven being a great collaborator and a team team member and being able to influence for impact this basically means being able to influence people to listen to you and be able to influence the way that a project might go and then business Acumen as well as you’re working with a ton of different stakeholders and there’s a lot of considerations to take into account and I’m sure some of you have heard of the Microsoft Aspire experience but if you do join Microsoft straight out of school you will be joining or you’ll have the opportunity you don’t have to we won’t Force anything on you but you have the opportunity to join the Microsoft expire Aspire experience which is a program for all gr graduates that are joining us fresh out of University so it’ll help you not only navigate just that transition from school to corporate world but it’ll introduce you to to life at Microsoft int introduce you to a ton of people that’ll probably be your friends for life and it’ll help you chart a really good path for yourself so it’s much more than just an onboarding program it’s really there to inspire you I think to take you know think about the bigger picture of where you want to go in your career and where you want to go in life and help you craft the best way to get there so there’s a very carefully considered set of immersive learning experiences networking opportunities and career development tools that will help you forge those connections like I mentioned with peers from all over the world so people who are in the same situation as you and then you know it’ll help you also build lifelong career skills that’ll you’ll take outside of this Aspire experience into maybe another company if you join another company or further down the line at Microsoft and it’ll also help you discover a world of growth and opportunity if you do want to explore other roles so once you receive a full-time offer straight out of school you’re you’ll automatically be enrolled if you if you’d like to join the aspired experience so I think it’s a really great way to help everyone fresh out of school get acclimated I wish I personally went through this when I graduated all right now down to the my favorite part the recruiting focus of of this presentation which is essentially how to apply to Microsoft and how to make your resume stand out so first things first in order to be considered for a role at Microsoft you always have to apply online that’s it all starts with an application and I do want to note jobs are posted at different times throughout the year so if you don’t see a role right now like if you went to go to the career site and you searched I don’t know that’s whatever job you’re interested in security engineer and you didn’t see that right now it’s possible that it would be posted later so I encourage you to set up job alerts so you can get emailed as soon as a job is posted that matches the filter that you were looking for and so if you are selected to interview which you will know you will get an email directly from someone on the recruiting team and typically interviews if you’re interviewing for an intern position you typically have two 45 minute interviews if you’re interviewing for a full-time role it’s typically three and they’re each 45 minutes just one-on-one with Microsoft employees so no panel style or anything too intimidating and then after you interview typically you’ll hear back within a week or two at the most and you’ll receive your decision on whether you’re receiving an offer and your offer results typically you’ll have about a month to decide on if you would like to accept your offer here at Microsoft but before you do apply I know I missed the first step here which was to prepare your resume in your LinkedIn and that’s because I wanted to share some tips on how to prepare your resume before you do apply to my Microsoft or if you’ve already applied you can always update your resume later so I think these are really good building blocks to a resum of course I’m sure all of you know a lot of this already but I think it doesn’t hurt to look back at your resume refine it and always keep it like a live document update it and so I think at the top always having your contact info I think it’s a really good place below your contact info to have your school especially if you’re early in profession you’re still in school or you just graduated because that’s kind of the most relevant right now to most recruiters we want to see when your gradu expected graduation month and year is what your major is what relevant courses you’ve taken and all of that jazz and then going into your experiences any anything counts as an experience whatever you have experience with if you don’t have a previous internship that’s okay if you have projects if you have volunteer work hackathons if you’ve been a research assistant or a teaching assistant any kind of experience that you’ve had either on campus or off-campus I think is is fair game anything that you want your recruiters to see that you have skills in to do the job is is very valid to put on your isit and then I always get the question of should I include soft skills and technical skills and I think skills are skills no matter what skills you have put them on your resume if you think they’re relevant to the job that you’re applying to so if that’s customer Obsession feel free to put that on your resume and I think you know programming languages or if you’ve yeah worked with certain Tech Stacks any type of skill that you’ve gained not only list it under your skill section but also maybe incorporate it into your experiences where you describe how you’ve used that skill and a couple of tips on your resume I just want to call out a couple of ones here because there’s there’s kind of a lot on the topic of Education because I get this question a lot too GPA matters way less than you think you can include your GPA if you want to like if you’re really proud of it and you’re like I want everyone to know my GPA totally that’s that’s great but it’s not necessary and we don’t really consider it when we’re we’re looking at the skills that you have to do the job so include it if you want but it’s not super pertinent I also think it’s really important people might be like a little afraid to do this but I think you should always have other people review your resume I personally hate when people read my resume but I I need to get over the fear because you never know what other people’s perspectives could be and they could help you craft it into a way that you maybe didn’t think of or help you format it even or catch some spelling errors which I know if I’m reading my own resme over and over again I’m might not be able to catch every spelling error so or grammatical error so those are some of my tips but feel free to take any of the tips here on this slide and lastly I wanted to talk about some application tips as you do apply I mentioned some of these things during the culture portion of this deck but if you do you know interview at Microsoft I think on the left side of the screen if you can answer these questions why Microsoft why Tech why this role and your skills I think you’ll be set up for success I also think we want to have we want to get to know your skills but we also want to get to know you as a person so we want to get a sense of your passion your versatility are you agile can you adjust to change because we live in a world where change is imminent and it’s it’s unavoidable especially with AI taking over and like we there’s a lot of change in Innovation happening especially at Microsoft which is the world’s most Innovative company so knowing that you’re versatile and that you’re driven if you can drive for results I think that those are going to set you up for success in an interview so I do want to leave you lastly before we move on to Q&A there’s one last video and I apologize if it’s quiet again I will try and turn up the volume and try and turn it up on your end as well here we go but the one thing that I’ve to also reframe and for myself as well as everyone at Microsoft is what if you change this equation instead of saying that I work for Microsoft what if Microsoft worked as a platform for every one of our 100,000 people that’s how I think about Microsoft I’m at Microsoft and all through the years is because I felt wow I want them amazing Global platform to have impact and that’s what got me to sort of remain there be ambitious for what we can do what I can do and that’s to me the ultimate call it’s not like you know of course the CEO has to LIF the culture has to you be able to make sure the leadership team lives those values but if you can switch on every person every employees every team members own mindset to say well I’m not just work here Microsoft’s working for me then you achieve something so hopefully you could hear that I just wanted to leave you all with that as a final thought from Satia just which I think summarizes you know how we want you to think about a career at Microsoft the difference that you can make and the impact that we all can have so thank you so much for listening oops thank you so much for listening I’m happy to take some questions cool being he sh so there’s going to be me feeding you a few questions can you hear me yep okay awesome sauce so let’s get started the first question we have is what are the things that candidates have done or can do to stand out to have the application stand out yes I love that question and I think that’s probably my most like asked question and I don’t love my answer to it to be honest I actually posted about this on my LinkedIn profile if anyone follows me you can go see what I what I had to say but I I think the biggest thing that we look for is passion for technology period like as you’ve learned about Microsoft we are a very Innovative technology company and one of the leaders in the industry so if we can see that you’re all so passionate about that we will see that you will help us live out our mission and make our mission come to life but I also want to note that like even if you have a perfect resume you have encompassed that you have a passion for technology through your internships and your hackathons and experiences and projects and you have a great resume and you have all the skills you have data structures and algorithms and all of that I’m talking specifically about a software engineering role because that’s what I recruit for but yeah if you have all the skills and everything on your resume for the role but you still don’t get noticed or don’t get selected by a recruiter I just I hope you don’t take that as a hit on yourself especially in a market like we’re in right now where it’s kind of an employer Market I would say don’t don’t like get down on yourself it’s probably not because of you it’s probably because of the conditions that are very much out of your control so just keep trying keep pushing on keep applying finding new opportunities setting up job alerts on our career site attending events like this like yeah I think we’re focusing on what you can control is what’s best rather than thinking oh shoot I didn’t have enough on my resume to stand out for sure I think that’s amazing advice because a lot of our students if they don’t get that that email to say hey you’re going to the next step like it’s it’s a downer you know impostor in immediately so I think that’s amazing advice for them the next question what are some common pitfalls or small mistakes that interviewees or early career candidates often make Are there specific things you think students should be mindful of or need to practice for the hiring process yeah that’s a really good question too I think the most most common Pitfall I’ll say is not talking through your thought process during the interview you know it’s okay to hear a question and let’s say it’s a technical interview for a software engineering role and you are coding live and let’s say they ask you the question but you’re kind of stuck and you’re like thinking but you’re just silent and not sharing what you’re thinking about that doesn’t show great collaboration skills and I think that that’s something that interviewers want to see is like they they want to hear what you’re thinking about hear your thought process how you’re breaking down the problem and I think a lot of candidates just kind of freeze up and like are silent in their heads which is totally fine I get that but if you even just share that like hey I’m thinking about this and then you’re like oh can I ask some clarifying questions to make sure I understand the problem better or is it okay if I explain my answer like this and they would love to kind of just hear your thought process so I think talking things through is the biggest Pitfall for sure sure love that next question we have you spoke to this a bit in the last answer do you but do you have any other tips for doing well in Microsoft internship interviews yes yes absolutely I think my my biggest tip is to come to the interview obviously I know you’ll all do your due diligence and come to interviews prepared but I think the way that you prepare will help set you up for Success so my recommendation is always to come to an interview with examples written down whether that’s on your computer or literally on a piece of paper that’s okay and I think you should go to the Microsoft career site we have a page called hiring tips and that’s where we list all six of our core competencies which all of our interviews are there to assess which is those six core competencies and I think if you read each competency and write some examples of what you’ve done to exemplify that then you’ll have an answer to every question you won’t be stumped you can just look at your examples and and have something prepared to say and I think with those examples when you’re answering the questions if you try and answer in a situation task action result or Star method that will set you up for success to not like ramble and make sure you don’t miss anything and also exemplify that you actually can exhibit that core competency for sure not to put you on spot but can we just do a talk a little about the star method because some students know what it is but they don’t know helpful it actually is when interviewing yes yes so let’s say the question was tell me about a time that you had to work with someone who you disagreed with on a project so you would answer this in the situation task action result method so you would say oh well one time I was working on a project where I had to recruit at the CodePath conference and my colleague disagreed with the way that we were doing things I’m sorry I don’t have anything super specific to say but that’s the situation and then you would go into the task which is so but in order to ensure that we were successful with our recruitment at this conference here’s what I did XYZ and that’s kind of Your Action so you’re explaining like what you did oh I had a meeting with them and heard them out and heard out their perspectives and then the results which is the last the r in Star is and then we were successfully able to come to a happy medium and this is what happened and then I think the last R which would make it St r r is reflection because Microsoft is all about growth mindset we want to hear like how did you reflect on situations and how can you use that knowledge to improve in the future so I would say and because of that I next time I recruit at a conference I think I would do XYZ differently awesome awesome thank you for that we have a awesome question let me scroll back up to it so how helpful are referrals some companies do they don’t prioritize them but some companies mentioned that they’re very very helpful so when it comes to Microsoft how important or yeah how important our referrals for you all great question I also love this one in Microsoft we are very much committed to an equitable hiring process and because of that we don’t prioritize referrals so they aren’t super helpful in my personal opinion I do think you know if someone has worked with you at Microsoft and they can explain and vouge for your skills and say like oh I went to school with them and they excelled in this class or I was in an internship with them and they were amazing on this project I definitely think that that will be taken to consideration absolutely that’s the whole reason we have the referral program is to like be able to see if our Microsoft employees have valuable referals but I don’t think it’s it’s not necessary because it doesn’t kind of Advance you further or like guarantee you anything awesome love that love that next question as you focus on hiring software engineer roles what are you looking for when reviewing candidates roles yeah I would say the first thing that we’re looking for is eligibility I think that that’s like number one just to make sure you’re even eligible for the role so if it’s an internship do you have our required qualification for that is that you have at least one term of school after the summer internship so that’s another reason why you want to include your graduation month and year and your educ in your education section on the resume and then I think we’re also looking for basic computer science skills so have you taken data structures and algorithms do you have experience with object-oriented programming where have you used those skills so if you have experience with python like if you list that I want to be able to read like where did you use Python did you use that in a project did you use that in internship and I think that those are the main things that we’re looking for because we’re hiring for early and career folks we are not looking for anything too in depth but I would say that and then passion for technology so is there something that makes you and I know we talked about this stand out like did you work on a really cool project or have a really cool idea for a mobile app and talk about that like those are the things that we like to look for both inside outside the classroom any way you can show that passion for technology gotcha so it’s a it’s a great idea to add their in process looks like for new grad rols for example how long it takes to move from through the process through the recruitment process yeah great question so once you submit an application you’ll receive an update on your application within the Microsoft career site in your action center so that’s like providing you real-time updates on on all of your applications and a lot of the times I will answer I’m going to call this out because this is a really common question we get we have a lot of the times when you apply to a role you’ll automatically get an update that your application has been transferred or routed and that all that means is that it’s routed to the appropriate recruiter so of course we’re making thousands of hires so not just one recruiter is aligned to one role we have like multiple Recruiters on one role so we have to Route everyone to their dashboards so if you see that your application was transferred that’s all that means it’s the same position as the one you originally applied to but it might have like a different application name just because of which recruiter you’re aligned to so that will happen automatically and then you should get another update within 90 days which I know is a really long time I appreciate everyone’s patience in advance but we have so many applicants to go through so 90 days is the maximum that it would take to get an update on your application hopefully it’s sooner but if you are selected for an interview you would get reached out to by a recruiter and they would essentially say you’re invited for interviews whether that’s if you’re full-time candidate most of the time that means you’re taking a technical Screen through codility and you have 21 days I believe to to complete those and then once you complete it then you might get invited to final round interviews and if you’re invited to final rounds typically after you’re reached out to they’ll occur within like two weeks that’s or two to four weeks I would say and then post interview you’ll get your result within a week and then you have four weeks to decide on your offer awesome awesome love that last question if you were to give our attendees one piece of advice around their job search their job searching and Landing a rooll with Microsoft what would that be I have so much advice to give but I would say and this is kind of related to the question I answered before is is persistence and showing that you doing anything you can to show that you exemplify Microsoft’s core values and competencies and continue you know joining events like this and learning about the industry learning about Microsoft and then if you do you know get the opportunity to interview I think showing that you have a passion for What Microsoft does does that your interviewers are going to love that they’re going to like eat that up so I think you know being persistent not getting down in yourself and actually applying like I know a lot of candidates I feel like don’t even put their name out there because they’re they’re like I’m not going to get chosen anyway so what’s the point but you’re never going to know if you can get chosen if you didn’t apply so just apply anyway so apply to as many rules as you are interested and meet the qualifications for and then if you do get interviewed show that passion for technology and that passion for Microsoft and do your research on our you know core values and our culture awesome thank you so much for that let’s give Chi and Microsoft a round of applause in the chat we really really appreciate you for for coming and doing this with us we again we love our
